What an edger service actually involves

Edgers cop a hammering. Concrete, limestone, the odd reticulation pipe. Most of them come in with two or three issues at once, not just a blunt blade. Here's what we go through:

Blade inspection & replacement

Edger blades wear fast on Perth's limestone driveways. We check the edge, the mounting, and replace if it's chipped or under spec.

Shaft & bearing service

Sand and grass clippings get into the shaft over time. We strip it, clean the bearings, regrease, and check for play.

Drive belt replacement

Belt-driven edgers stretch and slip. If yours is slow to spin up or screeching on startup, the belt's the usual culprit.

Carburettor clean & rebuild

Two-stroke edgers sitting over winter gum up fast. We strip the carby, clean the jets, and replace gaskets and diaphragms as needed.

Fuel system service

Old fuel, blocked filters, perished lines. Cheap to fix, but it's why most edgers won't start after a long break.

Full diagnostic & tune

Spark, compression, ignition timing, idle, throttle response. Same diagnostic process we've used for 50 years.

A note for Armadale edger owners

Armadale sits in the foothills with a mix of older homes, larger rural blocks, and newer estate development. Plenty of substantial edging to do here, and the harder soil and gravel driveways take their toll on blades and bearings.

Edgers from Armadale often come in with shaft and bearing issues from running over gravel and stones. Worth checking the gearhead grease every year if you've got a stony block.

If it's a petrol, electric or battery edger and it's broken, we can have a look. Doesn't matter where you bought it.

The wheel bearings nobody thinks to check, until they fail

Edgers have wheels. Wheels have bearings. Bearings need maintenance. We see plenty of edgers come in with seized wheels because nobody ever thought about them.

Wheels on petrol edgers run on either bushings (plain plastic sleeves) or sealed bearings. Either way, they live a hard life. Sand, grit, water, vibration, all working to wear them out. When they seize, the wheel won't turn freely. The edger becomes hard to push, and the locked wheel drags across the ground until you wear a flat spot on it.

The early warning sign is a wheel that doesn't spin freely when you lift the edger. Spin each wheel by hand. They should spin at least a couple of full revolutions before stopping. If they barely turn, or stop dead, there's a problem.

For most edgers, the fix is straightforward:

  1. Pop the wheel off (usually a circlip, an R-clip, or a single bolt).
  2. Pull the bushing or bearing out, clean it with kero or degreaser.
  3. Inspect for wear. If the bearing rocks loosely on the axle, or the bushing is oval-shaped, replace it.
  4. If everything's still good, repack with bearing grease and reassemble.
  5. If the bearing is gone, new ones are $5 to $15 each.

While you've got the wheels off, check the axle itself. If sand has worked its way in there, the axle can wear grooves into itself. A grooved axle eats new bearings fast. If the axle has a worn step or a visible groove, replace it too.

The other thing worth doing: clean the wheels of caked-on grass and mud. A clean wheel is a happy wheel. Mud trapped against the wheel can hold moisture against the axle and cause rust. Couple of minutes with a hose and a stiff brush makes a difference.

Whole job, including new bearings if needed, takes about 30 to 45 minutes for both wheels. Saves you the cost of a whole new wheel assembly, which can be $40 to $80 a side on some edgers.

Common questions

Do you really pick up from Armadale for free?

Yep. Saturday pickup, Sunday delivery, no charge. We've been running this through Armadale and the rest of Perth for years.

How much does an edger service cost?

It depends on what's wrong with it and what brand you've got. Once we've had a proper look on the bench, we ring you with a fixed price before we do any work. No charging by the hour, no surprises.

My edger won't start. Is it worth fixing?

Almost always yes. Most "won't start" jobs come down to old fuel, a gummed-up carby, or a tired spark plug. None of those are expensive fixes. We'll have a look and tell you straight if it's not worth it.

How often should I service my edger?

Once a year for most home edgers. If you're a tradie running it daily, twice a year. Sand, salt, and dust are hard on bearings.

Do you service electric and battery edgers too?

We do. Battery edgers don't have carbies to worry about, but the shaft, blade, drive system and electronics all wear and we can service the lot. EGO Power+, Stihl battery, Honda battery, all good.

How long does it take?

Usually back to you within a week. Picked up Saturday, delivered the following Sunday at the latest. If parts have to come in, we'll let you know.

How do I book?

Easiest is the online booking on this page. Pick a slot, leave your address, done. Or ring us on (08) 9444 1284 if you'd rather talk to a person.

We also service edgers in nearby suburbs: Kelmscott · Mount Nasura · Mount Richon · Bedfordale · Roleystone
