What an edger service actually involves
Edgers cop a hammering. Concrete, limestone, the odd reticulation pipe. Most of them come in with two or three issues at once, not just a blunt blade. Here's what we go through:
Blade inspection & replacement
Edger blades wear fast on Perth's limestone driveways. We check the edge, the mounting, and replace if it's chipped or under spec.
Shaft & bearing service
Sand and grass clippings get into the shaft over time. We strip it, clean the bearings, regrease, and check for play.
Drive belt replacement
Belt-driven edgers stretch and slip. If yours is slow to spin up or screeching on startup, the belt's the usual culprit.
Carburettor clean & rebuild
Two-stroke edgers sitting over winter gum up fast. We strip the carby, clean the jets, and replace gaskets and diaphragms as needed.
Fuel system service
Old fuel, blocked filters, perished lines. Cheap to fix, but it's why most edgers won't start after a long break.
Full diagnostic & tune
Spark, compression, ignition timing, idle, throttle response. Same diagnostic process we've used for 50 years.
A note for Booragoon edger owners
Booragoon has a mix of established family homes, riverside properties, and newer infill development. Block sizes vary but most have substantial edging work, and we see a bit of everything from old Stihls to brand new battery units.
What we notice from Booragoon is well-maintained edgers that just need annual servicing rather than emergency repairs. The owners here tend to look after their gear, which means less drama on the bench.
Brands we service
Atom · Honda · Masport · Stihl · Husqvarna · Victa · Bushranger · Echo · Shindaiwa
If it's a petrol, electric or battery edger and it's broken, we can have a look. Doesn't matter where you bought it.
If your edger vibrates like crazy, stop using it
A wobbly blade isn't just annoying. It's eating your gearhead alive and you'll be up for a few hundred bucks if you don't sort it.
Edger blades spin at thousands of RPM. If the blade is even a few grams out of balance, the whole shaft is being shaken sideways every revolution. The bearings in the gearhead aren't designed for sideways load. They're designed for rotational load. Sideways load wears them out fast, and once a gearhead bearing fails, you're often looking at a 200 to 400 dollar repair, sometimes more.
Three things commonly throw a blade out of balance:
- Hitting something hard. Sprinkler head, garden bed edge, kid's toy. The blade chips on one side, now it's lighter on that side, now it's unbalanced.
- Uneven sharpening. If you've sharpened the blade yourself and taken more off one side than the other, you've made it unbalanced. Always do equal passes each side.
- Built-up grass or mud on one side. Less common but it happens. Caked-on lawn clippings can put a blade out of balance until you clean them off. Always clean the blade before storage.
How to check balance at home. Take the blade off (engine cold, plug out for safety). Hang it on a nail through the centre hole, sticking out of a piece of wood. Let it settle. If it sits level, it's balanced. If one side dips down, that side is heavier. You can take a tiny bit off the heavy side with a file, but only if you know what you're doing. Otherwise just replace the blade. They're cheap.
Signs your blade is out of balance:
- Vibration through the handle that wasn't there before.
- Edger feels like it's pulling sideways.
- Buzzing or chattering sound at full throttle.
- Gearhead getting noticeably hotter than normal after 10 minutes of use.
If you've got any of those, stop using it until you've sorted the blade. A new blade is 20 to 40 bucks. A new gearhead is 250 to 400. The maths is easy.

Common questions
Do you really pick up from Booragoon for free?
Yep. Saturday pickup, Sunday delivery, no charge. We've been running this through Booragoon and the rest of Perth for years.
How much does an edger service cost?
It depends on what's wrong with it and what brand you've got. Once we've had a proper look on the bench, we ring you with a fixed price before we do any work. No charging by the hour, no surprises.
My edger won't start. Is it worth fixing?
Almost always yes. Most "won't start" jobs come down to old fuel, a gummed-up carby, or a tired spark plug. None of those are expensive fixes. We'll have a look and tell you straight if it's not worth it.
How often should I service my edger?
Once a year for most home edgers. If you're a tradie running it daily, twice a year. Sand, salt, and dust are hard on bearings.
Do you service electric and battery edgers too?
We do. Battery edgers don't have carbies to worry about, but the shaft, blade, drive system and electronics all wear and we can service the lot. EGO Power+, Stihl battery, Honda battery, all good.
How long does it take?
Usually back to you within a week. Picked up Saturday, delivered the following Sunday at the latest. If parts have to come in, we'll let you know.
How do I book?
Easiest is the online booking on this page. Pick a slot, leave your address, done. Or ring us on (08) 9444 1284 if you'd rather talk to a person.
We also service edgers in nearby suburbs: Bicton · Attadale · Melville · Myaree · Brentwood
