What an edger service actually involves
Edgers cop a hammering. Concrete, limestone, the odd reticulation pipe. Most of them come in with two or three issues at once, not just a blunt blade. Here's what we go through:
Blade inspection & replacement
Edger blades wear fast on Perth's limestone driveways. We check the edge, the mounting, and replace if it's chipped or under spec.
Shaft & bearing service
Sand and grass clippings get into the shaft over time. We strip it, clean the bearings, regrease, and check for play.
Drive belt replacement
Belt-driven edgers stretch and slip. If yours is slow to spin up or screeching on startup, the belt's the usual culprit.
Carburettor clean & rebuild
Two-stroke edgers sitting over winter gum up fast. We strip the carby, clean the jets, and replace gaskets and diaphragms as needed.
Fuel system service
Old fuel, blocked filters, perished lines. Cheap to fix, but it's why most edgers won't start after a long break.
Full diagnostic & tune
Spark, compression, ignition timing, idle, throttle response. Same diagnostic process we've used for 50 years.
A note for Boya edger owners
Boya is in Perth's eastern hills, where blocks tend to be larger and more rural in character. Gravel driveways, decomposed granite paths, and harder soils all give edgers a workout that suburban units don't see.
Edgers from the Boya area come back to us with more shaft wear and bearing issues than the suburban average. Gravel driveways especially are tough on edger components. Worth checking the gearhead grease and shaft bearings annually.
Brands we service
Atom · Honda · Masport · Stihl · Husqvarna · Victa · Bushranger · Echo · Shindaiwa
If it's a petrol, electric or battery edger and it's broken, we can have a look. Doesn't matter where you bought it.
A bent shaft means a worn gearhead within months
If you've dropped your edger, hit a star picket, or run over something solid, your shaft might be slightly bent even if it looks straight. And a bent shaft destroys the gearhead.
The shaft is the long metal tube that runs from the engine down to the cutting head. Inside it is a flexible drive cable that transmits power from the engine to the gear at the bottom. The shaft itself is supposed to be perfectly straight. When it isn't, the inner cable runs eccentrically, creating extra friction and side load on the bearings at both ends.
Symptoms of a bent shaft:
- Vibration that wasn't there before, especially noticeable when the engine is at full revs.
- Heat at the gearhead end, more than usual after 5 to 10 minutes of running.
- A faint humming or whining sound from inside the shaft tube.
- Reduced cutting power at the blade, even though the engine sounds fine.
How to check for a bend. Engine off, plug out. Lay the shaft on a flat surface like a workshop bench. Roll it slowly. If it rolls smoothly and consistently, the shaft is straight. If it wobbles or pauses at a particular spot, there's a bend somewhere along that section.
For a more accurate test, you can spin the shaft (engine off, by hand) while watching the cutting head. If the head wobbles or the blade circle is out of true, the shaft is bent or the cable inside has gone wonky.
Honest news: a bent shaft is usually not economical to fix. Straightening a shaft to the precision needed for high-RPM running is workshop machine shop work. Most edger owners are looking at a new shaft assembly, $80 to $250 depending on the brand and model.
Sometimes the cable inside the shaft has bent rather than the shaft itself. That's an easier fix. New flexible drive cable is usually $30 to $60. The shaft tube can be reused if it's still straight.
Prevention is the message here. Don't drop the edger. Don't ride curbs with the wheels. Don't smash into garden bed edges at speed. The shaft is the most expensive thing on the edger to replace and the easiest to damage.

Common questions
Do you really pick up from Boya for free?
Yep. Saturday pickup, Sunday delivery, no charge. We've been running this through Boya and the rest of Perth for years.
How much does an edger service cost?
It depends on what's wrong with it and what brand you've got. Once we've had a proper look on the bench, we ring you with a fixed price before we do any work. No charging by the hour, no surprises.
My edger won't start. Is it worth fixing?
Almost always yes. Most "won't start" jobs come down to old fuel, a gummed-up carby, or a tired spark plug. None of those are expensive fixes. We'll have a look and tell you straight if it's not worth it.
How often should I service my edger?
Once a year for most home edgers. If you're a tradie running it daily, twice a year. Sand, salt, and dust are hard on bearings.
Do you service electric and battery edgers too?
We do. Battery edgers don't have carbies to worry about, but the shaft, blade, drive system and electronics all wear and we can service the lot. EGO Power+, Stihl battery, Honda battery, all good.
How long does it take?
Usually back to you within a week. Picked up Saturday, delivered the following Sunday at the latest. If parts have to come in, we'll let you know.
How do I book?
Easiest is the online booking on this page. Pick a slot, leave your address, done. Or ring us on (08) 9444 1284 if you'd rather talk to a person.
We also service edgers in nearby suburbs: Mundaring · Glen Forrest · Darlington · Greenmount · Helena Valley
