What an edger service actually involves
Edgers cop a hammering. Concrete, limestone, the odd reticulation pipe. Most of them come in with two or three issues at once, not just a blunt blade. Here's what we go through:
Blade inspection & replacement
Edger blades wear fast on Perth's limestone driveways. We check the edge, the mounting, and replace if it's chipped or under spec.
Shaft & bearing service
Sand and grass clippings get into the shaft over time. We strip it, clean the bearings, regrease, and check for play.
Drive belt replacement
Belt-driven edgers stretch and slip. If yours is slow to spin up or screeching on startup, the belt's the usual culprit.
Carburettor clean & rebuild
Two-stroke edgers sitting over winter gum up fast. We strip the carby, clean the jets, and replace gaskets and diaphragms as needed.
Fuel system service
Old fuel, blocked filters, perished lines. Cheap to fix, but it's why most edgers won't start after a long break.
Full diagnostic & tune
Spark, compression, ignition timing, idle, throttle response. Same diagnostic process we've used for 50 years.
A note for Casuarina edger owners
Casuarina is part of Perth's south-west industrial and residential corridor. Mix of older homes near the original townsite and newer estates further out. Plenty of tradies in the area running edgers as work tools, and a lot of homeowners doing their own gardens.
What we see most from Casuarina is edgers that work hard year-round. Industrial dust and limestone soil are tough on bearings and seals, and we usually catch a couple of issues at once when one comes in for service.
Brands we service
Atom · Honda · Masport · Stihl · Husqvarna · Victa · Bushranger · Echo · Shindaiwa
If it's a petrol, electric or battery edger and it's broken, we can have a look. Doesn't matter where you bought it.
Why your edger's throttle suddenly stuck on full
If you've ever had an edger run away from you because the throttle stuck open, you know how unsettling it is. Almost always a wiring or cable problem, not the carby.
A stuck throttle is usually one of three things:
- Throttle cable kinked or jammed. Often happens after the edger has been knocked over or stored badly. The outer sheath gets a kink in it and the inner cable can't slide back. Result: throttle stays open after you let off.
- Throttle return spring broken. There's a small spring at the carby end that pulls the throttle butterfly back to idle when you release the trigger. If it's broken or come adrift, throttle stays where you left it.
- Trigger lever jammed. Dirt and grass clippings build up around the trigger pivot. Eventually the trigger doesn't return cleanly to the released position.
If you've got a stuck throttle, first thing: hit the kill switch. Don't try to "ride it out" or wrestle the trigger. Engine off first, then diagnose.
Diagnosing once it's safe:
- Squeeze the trigger and release. Does the trigger return cleanly? If it sticks, dirt or wear in the trigger mechanism.
- Watch the throttle lever on the carby. Does it return to idle when you release? If not, problem is at the carby end.
- Run the cable through your fingers along its full length. Any rough spots, kinks, or sections where it doesn't slide smoothly?
Fixes:
- Trigger sticking. Pull the trigger assembly apart, clean the pivot, drip a small amount of light oil, reassemble. Free again.
- Cable binding. Try lubricating with light oil first. If it's still binding or kinked, replace the cable. $15 to $30.
- Return spring broken. Most carbys have a replaceable return spring. Often hard to source separately, so you might need a complete carby rebuild kit.
One thing to think about long-term: how you store the edger affects cable life. Don't lean it against a wall with the trigger pinned against the wall. Don't leave it in a position where the cable is sharply bent. Hang it on a hook with the cable hanging straight, or lay it flat with no kinks. Cables last much longer if you treat them gently when they're not being used.

Common questions
Do you really pick up from Casuarina for free?
Yep. Saturday pickup, Sunday delivery, no charge. We've been running this through Casuarina and the rest of Perth for years.
How much does an edger service cost?
It depends on what's wrong with it and what brand you've got. Once we've had a proper look on the bench, we ring you with a fixed price before we do any work. No charging by the hour, no surprises.
My edger won't start. Is it worth fixing?
Almost always yes. Most "won't start" jobs come down to old fuel, a gummed-up carby, or a tired spark plug. None of those are expensive fixes. We'll have a look and tell you straight if it's not worth it.
How often should I service my edger?
Once a year for most home edgers. If you're a tradie running it daily, twice a year. Sand, salt, and dust are hard on bearings.
Do you service electric and battery edgers too?
We do. Battery edgers don't have carbies to worry about, but the shaft, blade, drive system and electronics all wear and we can service the lot. EGO Power+, Stihl battery, Honda battery, all good.
How long does it take?
Usually back to you within a week. Picked up Saturday, delivered the following Sunday at the latest. If parts have to come in, we'll let you know.
How do I book?
Easiest is the online booking on this page. Pick a slot, leave your address, done. Or ring us on (08) 9444 1284 if you'd rather talk to a person.
We also service edgers in nearby suburbs: Kwinana Town Centre · Bertram · Wellard · Leda · Medina
