What an edger service actually involves
Edgers cop a hammering. Concrete, limestone, the odd reticulation pipe. Most of them come in with two or three issues at once, not just a blunt blade. Here's what we go through:
Blade inspection & replacement
Edger blades wear fast on Perth's limestone driveways. We check the edge, the mounting, and replace if it's chipped or under spec.
Shaft & bearing service
Sand and grass clippings get into the shaft over time. We strip it, clean the bearings, regrease, and check for play.
Drive belt replacement
Belt-driven edgers stretch and slip. If yours is slow to spin up or screeching on startup, the belt's the usual culprit.
Carburettor clean & rebuild
Two-stroke edgers sitting over winter gum up fast. We strip the carby, clean the jets, and replace gaskets and diaphragms as needed.
Fuel system service
Old fuel, blocked filters, perished lines. Cheap to fix, but it's why most edgers won't start after a long break.
Full diagnostic & tune
Spark, compression, ignition timing, idle, throttle response. Same diagnostic process we've used for 50 years.
A note for North Beach edger owners
North Beach is one of Perth's larger residential suburbs covering a mix of housing styles and property sizes. Plenty of edgers in the area, mostly residential petrol units with a growing number of battery edgers in the newer estates.
What we typically see from this part of Perth is edgers that need their first proper service after about 5 years of light home use. Owner brings it in saying it doesn't run right anymore. Usually just needs a carby clean and air filter, and it's good for another five years.
Brands we service
Atom · Honda · Masport · Stihl · Husqvarna · Victa · Bushranger · Echo · Shindaiwa
If it's a petrol, electric or battery edger and it's broken, we can have a look. Doesn't matter where you bought it.
No spark? It's probably the coil
If your edger won't fire and you've already changed the spark plug, the next suspect is the ignition coil. They fail more often than people realise.
The ignition coil is the part that takes 12 volts from the magneto in the flywheel and turns it into the 20,000+ volt pulse that fires the spark plug. It's a small black or grey block sitting next to the flywheel, with the spark plug wire coming out of one end.
Coils fail for two main reasons. Heat (they cook themselves over the years) and vibration (internal windings break). When they fail, they often fail intermittently. Edger fires up cold, runs for 10 minutes, then dies and won't restart until it cools down. Or it fires up some days but not others. Frustrating to diagnose.
Quick test for spark. Pull the spark plug out, leave it connected to the plug wire. Hold the plug body against the metal cylinder fins (so the plug threads are touching metal). Pull the cord. You should see a clear blue spark across the plug gap. If there's no spark, or a weak orange spark, you've got an ignition problem.
Before condemning the coil, check:
- The kill switch. Faulty kill switches short the ignition to ground and prevent spark. Disconnect the kill switch wire from the coil and try again.
- The plug wire and boot. Cracks or deterioration can let the spark jump to ground instead of through the plug. Inspect carefully.
- The coil air gap. The coil sits a fraction of a millimetre from the flywheel. If it's drifted out, no spark. Set it to the thickness of a business card (about 0.3mm) using a feeler gauge or piece of card as a spacer.
If all that checks out and there's still no spark, the coil's done. New coils are $35 to $80 depending on the model. Fitting is two bolts and a wire. Set the air gap correctly when you fit the new one (engine cold, business card between coil and flywheel, tighten the bolts, remove the card).
One more thing. Don't bother with a multimeter test on a coil unless you've got a specialist tester. The ohms readings vary wildly between brands and don't reliably tell you whether the coil works under spark conditions. A spark test is the only reliable check.

Common questions
Do you really pick up from North Beach for free?
Yep. Saturday pickup, Sunday delivery, no charge. We've been running this through North Beach and the rest of Perth for years.
How much does an edger service cost?
It depends on what's wrong with it and what brand you've got. Once we've had a proper look on the bench, we ring you with a fixed price before we do any work. No charging by the hour, no surprises.
My edger won't start. Is it worth fixing?
Almost always yes. Most "won't start" jobs come down to old fuel, a gummed-up carby, or a tired spark plug. None of those are expensive fixes. We'll have a look and tell you straight if it's not worth it.
How often should I service my edger?
Once a year for most home edgers. If you're a tradie running it daily, twice a year. Sand, salt, and dust are hard on bearings.
Do you service electric and battery edgers too?
We do. Battery edgers don't have carbies to worry about, but the shaft, blade, drive system and electronics all wear and we can service the lot. EGO Power+, Stihl battery, Honda battery, all good.
How long does it take?
Usually back to you within a week. Picked up Saturday, delivered the following Sunday at the latest. If parts have to come in, we'll let you know.
How do I book?
Easiest is the online booking on this page. Pick a slot, leave your address, done. Or ring us on (08) 9444 1284 if you'd rather talk to a person.
We also service edgers in nearby suburbs: Stirling · Innaloo · Doubleview · Scarborough · Trigg
