What an edger service actually involves
Edgers cop a hammering. Concrete, limestone, the odd reticulation pipe. Most of them come in with two or three issues at once, not just a blunt blade. Here's what we go through:
Blade inspection & replacement
Edger blades wear fast on Perth's limestone driveways. We check the edge, the mounting, and replace if it's chipped or under spec.
Shaft & bearing service
Sand and grass clippings get into the shaft over time. We strip it, clean the bearings, regrease, and check for play.
Drive belt replacement

A note for West Swan edger owners

How to put your edger away in May and not regret it in September
Most edger problems we see in spring are actually problems caused the previous autumn. How you store it matters more than how you use it.
If you live in Perth you've probably got a decent shed. Good. But putting an edger away for winter isn't just about lifting it onto a hook. There's a procedure if you want it to start first pull in spring.
Here's what we tell every customer who comes in for an end-of-season service:
- Run the tank dry, or use stabiliser. Two options. Either run it until it stalls so there's no fuel left to go off, or add a fuel stabiliser like Sta-Bil to a fresh tank, run it for a couple of minutes to get it through the carby, then store. Both work. Don't just leave half a tank of stale fuel in there.
- Pull the spark plug and squirt oil. A teaspoon of clean two-stroke oil into the cylinder, then pull the cord slowly a few times to coat the bore. Put the plug back in loose. This stops the cylinder rusting in the damp.
- Clean the air filter. Better to store it clean than start the new season pulling it apart.
- Wipe the shaft and blade. A rag with a bit of WD40 or similar. Stops surface rust on bare metal.
- Hang it up if you can. Off the floor, where mice can't get to it. We've cut more chewed-through fuel lines and ignition wires than I care to count.
One thing on fuel stabilisers. They work, but they have a shelf life themselves. Don't use a bottle of Sta-Bil that's been open in your shed for 3 years and expect it to do anything. Date the bottle when you open it.
Five minutes in May saves you a service call in September. Worth it.
