What a pressure cleaner service actually involves

Pressure cleaners cop a hammering. Pumps, hoses, fittings, engines, motors, all working under high pressure for hours at a time. Most jobs that come in are one of these:

Pump service & repair

The pump is the heart of the unit. We strip it, check for wear, replace what needs replacing, and pressure test before it leaves the bench.

Loss of pressure

If your cleaner is pulsing, surging, or just not building pressure like it used to, we'll find the cause and sort it.

Leaks & drips

Water leaking from the pump, the gun, the hose connections, or the lance. Usually a worn seal or fitting. Quick fix once we've got it on the bench.

Routine servicing

Pressure cleaners need regular maintenance to keep running properly. Most people skip it. We'll bring yours back up to spec.

Hose, lance & gun repair

The bits you handle take the most punishment. Leaking guns, damaged lances, split hoses. Genuine replacements where needed.

Engine & motor service

Petrol engine won't start? Electric motor cutting out? We service the engine end, not just the pump.

A note for Leeming pressure cleaner owners

Leeming is a mix of established residential, beachfront blocks, and trades running out of home workshops. Plenty of cleaners and detailers along the coast, plus the usual run of homeowners with their once-a-month patio blast.

Salt air is the recurring issue down here. The brass fittings on most pressure cleaners corrode from the outside in if you don't rinse the unit with fresh water after a coastal job. We see Leeming pumps with seized swivel fittings and locked-up trigger guns more than anywhere else in the south.

Brands we service

Karcher · Gerni · Stihl · Bar · Honda · Generac · Bosch · Ryobi · AR Blue Clean

If it's a pressure cleaner and it's broken, we can have a look. Petrol or electric, residential or commercial, doesn't matter where you bought it.

Duty cycle: the spec nobody mentions

Cheap pressure cleaners are designed for short bursts of use. If you try to run one for hours at a time, it's not designed for that and it'll fail. The duty cycle tells you the unit's intended use pattern.

Duty cycle is engineering shorthand for how much of the time the equipment can actually be running. A 30% duty cycle means the unit is designed to run 30% of the time and rest 70% of the time. A 100% duty cycle (or "continuous duty") can run all day.

Pressure cleaner duty cycles vary widely:

  • Cheap domestic electric: Effective duty cycle of 20 to 40%. Designed for 30 to 60 minute jobs with breaks.
  • Better domestic electric: 50 to 70% duty cycle. Can handle longer continuous work.
  • Domestic petrol: 70 to 100% duty cycle, depending on quality.
  • Commercial petrol: 100% continuous duty.

You won't find duty cycle on most consumer marketing because it's complicated and bad-news for cheap units. But you can infer it from clues:

  • "Recommended use" or "intended use" notes. If the manual says "designed for occasional residential use," that's a duty cycle hint.
  • Thermal protection prominent in features. If the marketing emphasises that the unit "shuts down to protect itself," that means it's expected to overheat.
  • Warranty conditions. Some warranties specifically exclude commercial or extended use. That tells you the duty cycle.
  • Pump construction. Plastic pumps with built-in seals = low duty cycle. Brass pumps with replaceable seals = high duty cycle.
  • Pump cooling design. Higher-duty pumps have more aggressive cooling features.

The mistake we see in workshop: a homeowner buys a cheap unit and uses it for an extended cleaning project (e.g. washing the entire house exterior over a Saturday). The unit thermal-cuts repeatedly during the day. They keep restarting it. By Sunday, the motor is damaged and the unit doesn't recover.

If you're going to use the unit for long jobs, you need duty cycle suitable for that. Cheap unit for cheap occasional use only. Long jobs need better gear.

One workaround if you're stuck with a low-duty-cycle unit: schedule breaks. 30 minutes on, 15 minutes off. Lets the unit dump heat. Better than running it to thermal cutoff repeatedly.

Common questions

Do you pick up from Leeming?

Yep. Pickup and delivery available across Leeming. We've been running services through this part of Perth for years.

How much does a pressure cleaner repair cost?

Depends on what's wrong and what brand you've got. Once we've stripped it on the bench, we ring you with a fixed price before doing any work. No hourly charging, no surprises.

My pressure cleaner won't build pressure. Worth fixing?

Almost always yes. Most "no pressure" jobs are unloader valves, worn pump seals, or blocked nozzles. None of those are expensive fixes on a decent unit. We'll have a look and tell you straight if it's not worth it.

How often should I service my pressure cleaner?

Annual oil change at minimum on the pump end. Tradies running them daily should service the pump every 6 months. Most homeowners never service theirs, which is why pumps fail at 5 years instead of 15.

Do you service electric pressure cleaners and commercial units?

Both. Karcher K-series and Bosch electrics, all the way up to Gerni and Stihl commercial petrol units. The pump end is similar across most of them, just different sizes and pressures.

How long does a repair take?

Usually back to you within a week. If parts have to come in (some of the European brands), we'll let you know.
